India Refining Summit concluded successfully: Emphasised on incorporation of green technologies and innovate sustainable options for transitioning the sector to a Net Zero future

New Delhi, 18th December 2024: The 7th edition of the India Refining Summit, held from 23- 24 October 2024 at the Eros Hotel, New Delhi, successfully delved into the latest trends in green and sustainable technologies for India’s refining industry. The summit, themed at 'Navigating green and sustainable technologies,’ attracted 180+ professionals from the diverse backgrounds including business executives, sector experts and PSU and government officials.

This pivotal platform for the downstream oil and gas sector was inaugurated by a distinguished panel of experts, including:

While energy transition is a top goal for today’s refineries to become carbon resilient in future, the summit was crucial in presenting and propagating the new and upcoming green technologies which will be instrumental in paving the path of refineries to become carbon neutral and attaining the business sustainability. The summit encompassed the latest regulatory and policy updates impacting the green and sustainable future of refining industry. This enabled businesses to stay informed and adapt to changing regulations, ensuring compliance and strategic planning.

The summit was graced by a diverse audience that included policy-makers, regulators decision-makers, industry leaders, suppliers and solution providers from both domestic and international markets. With more than 40 esteemed speakers and nine valued partners, the event provided a rich and insightful experience for all the attendees.

Reflecting on the successful conclusion of the 7th India Refining Summit, Mr Alok Sharma, Director (R&D), Indian Oil Corporation Limited, stated: "The completion of this summit marks a significant milestone for the refining industry in India. It is heartening to see the industry’s collective commitment towards energy efficiency, renewable energy and biofuels. Our ongoing efforts with the Green Hydrogen Mission are particularly promising as we aim to integrate green hydrogen plants with our refineries. Additionally, our focus on Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is set to make a substantial impact, as we develop cost-effective processes for carbon capture. Mr Chacko M Jose, Executive Director, Bina Refinery, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, expressed his valuable inputs on defining four livers for achieving the Net Zero; Efficiencies, Sourcing of renewable energy, the green hydrogen today, the CBG and the CCUS - Carbon capture, utilization, storage and Carbon offsetting. He further commented that: “There are a lot of good sessions which give a look at the future of how the refining sector is moving. Good number of questions came from the audience, which means they're aware to whatever is happening and a lot of learning happening on the way”.

The summit was concluded on 2nd day with a 70 minute workshop certification program on ‘Navigating Carbon Markets and Achieving Net Zero: Strategies for the Industry’ organised in collaboration with Carbon Markets Association of India (CMAI). The attendees from ESG and Refining Technical departments gained insights into carbon markets, strategies for leveraging them, and the potential for Indian refineries to participate in global markets.

In entirety the forum played a crucial role in enabling professionals across business verticals of Refining & allied sectors to benefit from insights like digital transformation and automation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, regulatory and policies and the future of the refining industry which spiked interesting discussions.
